Berlin Central Station, Hauptbahnhof in German, is the main railway station of the city, and the largest two-level crossing station in the European Union. It is located in the city center, right next to the Spree River, where the former Lehrter Bahnhof station was.
The building opened in 2006 for that year’s World Cup. Berlin Hauptbahnhof was designed by the German architect Meinhard von Gerkan and its construction took over 10 years. It stands in front of the Parliament and the Chancellery, further promoting the urban development of the area.
Strategically located half-way from the former central stations in eastern and western Berlin -Alexanderplatz and Zoologischer Garten-, Hauptbahnhof receives 240.000 people daily looking for both transport and tourist attractions.
