One of the main tourist attractions, as well as the meeting point for many guided tours, the Branderburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) is an old entrance to the city of Berlin and one of the main symbols of both Berlin and Germany.
Located in downtown Berlin, on the Paris Square and by the end of the Unter den Linden Avenue, it is not an Arc of Triumph but the access to the “New Berlin” of its time. The Branderburg Gate was built between 1788 and 1791, resembling the main entrance of the Acropolis of Athens. It has five entrances, the main one located in the center. On top of it is located the Quadriga, a five meter copper sculpture of the Goddess of Victory riding a carriage with four horses.
The Branderburg Gate was first rebuilt after the 2nd World War and then in the early XXI century. It has received some alterations, being the most remarkable some famous symbols of German militarism, the eagle and iron cross included in the Quadriga that were absent between 1957 and 1991, among others.
