The most renowned crossing point for the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie got its name from NATO’s phonetic alphabet, in which it comes after Checkpoints Alpha and Bravo on highways Helmstedt and Dreilinden, respectively. From 1961 –with the construction of the Wall- to 1990, American and Soviet tanks stood there, face to face.
Checkpoint Charlie is located on Friedrichstraße, where the Mitte and Kreuzberg districts meet. A sign on Kreuzberg still reads “you are now leaving the American sector”. This crossing point was only used by Allies, the military, foreigners, GDR officials and employees of the Permanent Representation during the Cold War.
Spectacular escape attempts -some successful, some tragic- took place on Checkpoint Charlie. The original guard house was demolished in 1990 and rebuilt in 2000. The museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie tells the story of the Berlin Wall.
