Fernsehturm is the German word for “television tower”. The most famous “Fernsehturm” is located in downtown Berlin, very close to Alexanderplatz, and stands as a symbol of this city.
Built in 1965-1969 by the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the Fernsehturm is visible throughout the city center and the Spree River. It is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers. The concrete shaft has a height of 250m and is topped by a stainless steel sphere and a 118m-long TV antenna, totaling 368 meters and making it the highest building in Germany.
Visitors can go up the Fernsehturm in a 40 seconds lift that takes them to a panoramic floor. There is also a rotating restaurant, the Telecafé, located in the middle of the sphere. The Telecafé makes a whole turn every 30 minutes, allowing a stunning 360 panoramic view, a different way to enjoy Berlin from above.
