Friedrichstraße is a commercial street in downtown Berlin. Inaugurated in the early XVIII century and named after the Prussian Prince Frederick I, this legendary street combines the tradition of the “Golden Twenties” with the modern architecture of the New Berlin.
On its 3.5 kilometers, Friedrichstraße goes north to south from Chausseestraße Street, on the northern Mitte district, all the way to Hallesches Tor Street, in the Kreuzberg district. It is also the main street on the Friedrichstadt district and the metro line U-6 goes under it.
The Berlin Wall cut Friedrichstraße on the famous crossing point Checkpoint Charlie. Once full of cafés, theatres and other entertainment venues, the southern half of the street now has a New York flair, with many new buildings. Boutiques and restaurants on Friedrichstadtpassage, and window-shopping or designer stores on Galeries Lafayette are the musts.
