Close to Alexanderplatz, the Funkturm -German for “radio tower”– reminds the visitor of the Eiffel Tower. Built on the 1920s, the tower -that is colloquially known as “der langer Lulatsch” or “the lanky lad”- is 150 meters high and offers a wonderful view of the city.
Located on the Messe exhibition grounds, in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough, the Funkturm was conceived only as a transmission tower at first, to improve the quality of radio broadcasts in the city. Later a restaurant was added 52 meters high and an observation deck was installed 125 meters high, promoting a leisure and tourist concept.
An elevator takes visitors up the tower. During the day, the Funkturm’s observation deck offers a stunning panoramic view of the city, the Grunewald forest and the surrounding lakes. At night, the lighting of the city is absolutely astonishing.
