Surrounded by the German Cathedral, the French Cathedral and the Konzerthaus, the Gendarmenmarkt is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. A statue of the German poet Friedrich Schiller occupies the center of the square.
Originally known as Linden-Markt, the square was laid out in the late XVII century according to the plans of Johann Arnold Nering. Later known as the Friedrichstädtischer Markt or Neuer Markt, Georg Christian Ungerin reconstructed it on 1773. It was then named Gendarmenmarkt because of the cuirassier regiment that used it as "gens d´arms" 1736-82.
Severely damaged during the Second World War, the Gendarmenmarkt and its surrounding buildings were soon restored to their former state, as they can be seen nowadays.
