Also known as the Holocaust-Mahnmal (Holocaust Memorial), the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is a nostalgic place for remembrance of the past. Built near the Brandenburger Tor and the Reichstag, it was inaugurated in 2005 and receives 10.000 visitors daily.
The idea was first encouraged in 1989 by a German journalist, Lea Rosh. The contest for the design and concept took place in 1994 and the parliament approved the construction on 1999. The involvement of Degussa, a German company that had also participated in the Holocaust, was very controversial and delayed the construction of the memorial.
Designed by architect Peter Eisenman, the Holocaust Memorial was conceived as a Field of “Stelae”, which has 2711 concrete columns of different height laid down in a grid pattern open on all sides, allowing visitors to enter from any side of it. The confusion experienced walking on it is intended to show how the Holocaust victims felt. There is also an underground information centre.
