Considered the Champs-Élysées of Berlin, Kurfürstendamm -or Ku'damm, as it is known locally- is one of the most popular avenues of the city. Stretching from Gedächtniskirche to Halensee, the 3.5 km long west Berlin boulevard is full of life. Designer and department stores, car show rooms, fancy houses, hotels and restaurants stand on both sides of this broad street.
As most of the city, the Kurfürstendamm was badly damaged in the Second World War. Once a meeting point of intellectuals, the boulevard was redeveloped in the fifties, when new buildings appeared. Café des Westens, where bohemians and artists used to gather, found its successor on Café Kranzler – Kranzlerek since 2001.
The Kempinski hotel, Theater am Kurfürstendamm, Schaubühne Theatre, Berlin-Halensee railway station and the 1987 "Beton Cadillacs" sculpture by Wolf Vostell can also be seen on the sides of this lively street.
