The Nikolaiviertel -Nikolai Quarter- is a small neighborhood in the Mitte district. As a reconstructed version of the historical centre of Berlin, it lies on the eastern shore of the Spree River, limited by the streets Rathausstraße, Spandauer Straße and Mühlendamm.
Traditional German restaurants and bars can be found on each side of Nikolaiviertel’s medieval lanes, giving visitors the impression of traveling back to the “Old Berlin”. The houses and buildings were destroyed during the air raids and the area was left as a wasteland until its reconstruction in the 1980s, for Berlin’s 750th anniversary.
The oldest church of the city, the Nikolaikirche -Saint Nicholas Church- is a Roman basilica constructed in 1230 in the Nikolaiviertel. Other buildings not to be missed are the rococo Ephraim-Palais (now turned into a museum), the neoclassical-baroque Knoblauchhaus and the red sandstone Kurfürstenhaus (Prince-elector's House).
