Potsdamer Platz

Located in the centre of the city, the Potsdamer Platz -Potsdam Square- is a very popular attraction of the “New Berlin”. Big buildings with a great variety of restaurants, shops, theatres and cinemas, give a splendid-modern panorama to the surroundings of the place where the original square was.
In the 1730s a customs wall was built around Berlin. One kilometer south from the main entry -the Brandenburg Gate- this public square held the Potsdam Gate. Named after the city of Potsdam -25km southwest-, this crossroads allows the road from this city, the Potsdamer Straße, the entrance to Berlin. In 1838, with the opening of the Potsdamer Bahnhof train station, Potsdamer Platz became the most bustling traffic intersection in Europe.
Severely damaged during WWII and bisected by the Berlin Wall in the Cold War era, the Potsdamer Platz was left as a wasteland until German reunification, when it became the linking element between East and West Berlin, as well as the largest building site in Europe. Not to miss are the Debis-Haus with the "Panoramapunkt" viewing platform, the Weinhaus Huth, the Potsdamer Platz Arkaden mall, the Sony Center, the Beisheim Center and Park Kolonnaden.
