The Schloss Bellevue -Bellevue Palace- is the official residence of the German President since 1994. Located on the northern limit of the Tiergarten Park, near the Berlin Victory Column, the palace owes its name to its beautiful view over the Spree River. After 2006 reconstructions, the president and his family moved to a government-owned villa in the Dahlem district of Berlin.
Built in 1786 as a summer residence for Prince Ferdinand of Prussia, the Schloss Bellevue was the first neoclassical building in Germany. It is a three-winged complex: the main two-story building has an elaborate design, while the three-story “ladies’ wing” and “Spree wing” look more austere. Bellevue Palace is surrounded by a 20-hectares park.
Until 1918, the Schloss Bellevue was the official residence of the Crown Prince of Germany. In the 1930s it was used as an ethnography museum, and then became a guest house for the Third Reich. Damaged during WWII, it was first refurbished in the 1950s as a secondary residence for the German President, and then in the late 1980s it became the official residence, as it still remains nowadays.
