The largest palace in Berlin, the Schloss Charlottenburg is located in the district of the same name. With its baroque architecture and rococo exotic decoration of its interiors, the Schloss Charlottenburg is one of the most beautiful palaces in the city. A belvedere, a mausoleum, a theatre and a pavilion are some of the buildings erected on its grounds, which include a large back garden surrounded by woodlands.
Originally named Lietzenburg, the Schloss Charlottenburg was commissioned in the late 1690s by Sophie Charlotte, wife of Friedrich III, Elector of Brandenburg. First thought as a summer house, the palace was extended in the style of Versailles in 1701, when Friedrich became King of Prussia. In 1705 Sophie died, and Friedrich changed the castle’s name to Charlottenburg in her honor.
The Great Oak Gallery -Banqueting Hall-, the Porcelain Room, the White Room and the Golden Gallery are some of the most impressive rooms in the Schloss Charlottenburg. The former theatre is now a history museum, while the palace grounds and surrounding buildings are visitors’ all time favorites.
