On July 20th, 1944, members of the German army attempted to assassinate Hitler by detonating a bomb in his East Prussia’s headquarters. He survived. That same night, four of the rebels were executed. The place where these murders took place is now the Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand – German Resistance Memorial Centre.
Dedicated to the memory of German nationals who resisted and opposed Nazism, the Memorial to the German Resistance is located on the “Bendler block”, a complex of offices in the southern area of the Tiergarten. First opened in 1968, the exhibition now contains over 5000 items – official documents, posters, newspapers, letters and images- that illustrate the motivations, goals and actions of those involved in the resistance.
A statue of a naked man in the central courtyard signals the exact place where the massacre occurred. A plaque on one of the walls reads: “You did not bear the shame. You resisted. You bestowed an eternally vigilant symbol of change by sacrificing your impassioned lives for freedom, justice and honor.”
