An UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990, the natural reserve of Pfaueninsel -Peacock Island- is a lovely place for a day trip. Considered an idyll of nature, the island stands on the Havel River near the Wannsee Lake, in Southwest Berlin.
Reached only by ferry, the Pfaueninsel is home to many landscaped parks and gardens. Peacocks stroll around freely, while other exotic birds can be found in captivity. The island is a Special Protection Area for wild birds. A rich flora and postcard buildings complement the nice views.
The Pfaueninsel Palace, constructed in 1794-97 as a love nest for the Prussian king Frederick William II and his mistress Wilhelmine Enke, includes artificial ruins that make it seem a medieval castle. With its romantic and exotic interiors, this place is a must for every Peacock Island visitor.
