A very austere complex of plain brick buildings standing behind a 6m-high wall, the Gedenkstätte Plötzensee - Plötzensee Memorial Centre - is a tribute to all victims of the National Socialism.
Once used as a prison, today the Plötzensee Memorial Centre stands in the same place where 2891 people were executed between 1933 and 1945. Half of them were Germans, members of the Red Orchestra, Kreisau Circle and other groups considered “Enemies of the State”, while the other half were Czechoslovakian, Polish and French resistance fighters.
Separated from the rest of the complex in 1951, the execution shed was turned into a memorial. Visitors can go into the actual execution chamber and learn about the way the judiciary functioned during the Nazi regime. A stone urn in front of the Gedenkstätte Plötzensee commemorates the victims.
