Basketball is a big sport both in both Germany and Berlin. It is practiced by men and women, with one national team for each gender. Many of the German players come from families with an immigrant background, with ancestors from America, Africa or Eastern Europe.
In Berlin, whoever talks about basketball is talking about Alba Berlin, one of the top teams in the German league of men’s basketball. The Albatross, as they like to be called, are also one of the best teams in Europe and their games are very exciting, with fans crazier than those in NBA leagues.
Alba Berlin used to play its home games at the Max-Schmeling-Halle, in the district of Prenzlauer Berg. In September 2008 the team moved to the O2 World, a multi-functional venue with locations for 16,000 basketball fans. This venue also hosts home games for the hockey team Eisbären Berlin and concerts. The O2 World also held the MTV Music Awards.
