Football is by far the most popular sport in Germany. On an international level, the successful German national football team (in German: Die deutsche Fußballnationalmannschaft) won the World Cup in the years 1954, 1974 and 1990. It also won three European Championships in 1972, 1980 and 1996. Additionally, the female national football team has also won its World Cup in 2003 and 2007.
In Berlin, football is also the main sport, practiced all over the city. The Berlin Football Association registers some 360 football clubs in this city, being Hertha BSC Berlin the main one.
A founding member of 1900’s German Football Association in Leipzig, Hertha BSC Berlin competes nowadays in the first division of the Bundesliga – since 1963, the highest level league competitions, currently operated by the Deutsche Fußball Liga and among the top 5 for European leagues.
The Hertha BSC team plays all its Bundesliga matches in Berlin's Olympiastadion (Olympic Stadium). With a capacity of 74,500 people, the Olympiastadion is Germany’s second-largest stadium, right after Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion (with 82,932 locations).
Built in 1936, the Olympiastadion also hosts the German Cup, annually. The 2006 FIFA World Cup final and five other matches of that same tournament also took place here. Check the Olimpiastadion Guided Tours.
