Built for the 1936 Olympic Games, the Olympiastadion is a multipurpose stadium located in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin, where the former Deutschlandstadion -planned for the 1916 Olympics, cancelled because of WWI- used to be. The Olympiastadion can hold 74.500 seated people on its platform.
As home ground of the soccer club Hertha BSC Berlin and the former Berlin Thunder club -member of the NFL Europe Football Club-, the Olympiastadion gained a strong football tradition. Several FIFA World Cup matches were also held in this football hub: 3 in 1974 and 6 in 2006, including the final in which Italy defeated France.
The Olympiastadion was renovated in 2000-2004. Hi tech illumination and sound equipment were included in the € 242 million investment, together with 113 VIP stands, restaurants and 2 underground garages. Currently, the transparent roof is 68 meters over the seats. Its western side -Marathon Arch- is open to allow a view of the bell tower, which can be climbed by visitors.
If you are in Berlin and decide to visit the Olympiastadion, you will be able to choose among the following guided tours:
• A glimpse behind the scenes: 60 to 75 minutes visiting VIP areas, changing rooms, the underground warm-up training hall and other areas of the stadium which are not open to the general public. The tour is usually in German, but there are special dates for tours in English.
• Hertha BSC Tour: Visit players’ and VIP areas, the team’s club grounds –like the amateur stadium and the training grounds- to end at Hanns-Braun-Strasse. Offered in German only.
• A customized guided tour: Not convinced by any of the other tours? Visiting the Olympiastadion with a school / student group or with a big group of people? Call and book in advance a tour according to your preferences.
