As any other time you travel, make sure you have healthcare coverage while you visit Berlin. Get familiar with the services included on your health insurance, if you will be demanded an immediate co-payment, if they take credit cards – or just cash. It is advised to have a policy that covers emergency fights back home.
German medical services are excellent; Berlin has some 9000 doctors and dentists. The city has a long tradition as a place of medical technology, scientific advances and medicine. If you need to see a doctor, contact the US or UK consulates for a list of English speakers, and choose one that accepts your insurance.
EU citizens holding a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are entitled free or reduced cost medical treatment if they get sick or injured. The EHIC doesn’t cover emergency repatriation home. Non-EU citizens might benefit from a reciprocal agreement between their home country and Germany, or obtain worldwide healthcare coverage.
No vaccinations are required to visit Germany. As for smoking, most offices and public transportation are smoke free, while restaurants have specially identified areas for smokers and non-smokers.
